About Mouth Guards

Preventing oral and a facial injury is just as important as good hygiene; preventing tooth decay and by going to regular visits to the dentist.

The statistics are disturbing: There are more than 200 000 accidents affecting the mouth and teeth each year in Quebec.

The Ordre des Dentistes du Québec recommends wearing a mouth guard if you are participating in sports or in recreational activities to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue. A mouth guard is a removable plastic appliance that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injuries during contact sports. Although mouth guards have been shown to be effective in preventing dental and oro-facial injury, this is not a bullet proof solution.

They have also been recommended for their role in preventing or reducing the severity of concussions. However, this has not been scientifically proven.

Mouth guards are recommended for the following sports:

Football

Martial arts

Skiing

Basketball

Gymnastics

Hockey

Boxing

Sky diving

Volleyball

Mountain biking

Soccer

Wrestling

Skate boarding

Water polo

Squash

There are basically two types of mouth guards available. The mouth formed mouth guards are more or less adapted and bulky. Custom fitted mouth guards provide a better fit and protection. A high quality mouth guard is stable and allows to breathes and speak easily. Speak to your dentist who can suggest the proper design of mouth guard based on your specific activity.
