The Ordre des Dentistes du Québec recommends wearing a mouth guard if you are participating in sports or in recreational activities to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue. A mouth guard is a removable plastic appliance that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injuries during contact sports. Although mouth guards have been shown to be effective in preventing dental and oro-facial injury, this is not a bullet proof solution.
They have also been recommended for their role in preventing or reducing the severity of concussions. However, this has not been scientifically proven.

There are basically two types of mouth guards available. The mouth formed mouth guards are more or less adapted and bulky. Custom fitted mouth guards provide a better fit and protection.
